East Pool Whim

Across Agar Road, Pool from Taylor's Shaft, this engine house is known as East Pool Whim. Both engine houses are owned by The National Trust and are open to the public. This one houses a steam winding engine built in 1887 to pump water from the 1,500 feet deep Michell's Shaft. The engine has been preserved and still works, now driven by an electric motor, so the flywheel still revolves. A few years ago the chimney was struck by lightning causing a large collapse of masonry and the top section has since been rebuilt. (6.00 p.m. 24 September 1999)
